Beating Inflation: Time To Move Beyond Conventional Avenues

Posted On Thursday, Jun 16, 2022

Inflation is when your hard-earned money loses value. It’s when you pay a higher price for daily food items such as cereals, milk, fruits, vegetables, spices, etc. It can also mean that the money that you have set aside for your goals is falling short of meeting your expectations.

This presents a good opportunity to relook at your financial goals and plan your investments to shield your money from the impact of inflation.

Decoding Inflation

Beating Inflation – Time to Move Beyond Conventional Avenues

Though several banks have revised their interest rates to accommodate the anticipated hikes in repo rates, conventional avenues like Bank FDs still fall behind. They are yet to catch up to the higher than anticipated projected inflation. With negative real rates, Bank deposits may not be the preferable investment option.

After the RBI MPC policy meeting on Jun 08th, the inflation projection for FY23 has been revised to 6.7% and therefore, the real difference between FD interest rates and inflation will widen further.

For example, assuming you plan to invest in a Bank FD that increases in value by 5.5% each year, but inflation is projected to be 6.7%, the real return from that investment will be a negative 1.2%. Along with this, taxation on Bank FDs is based on the investor’s income tax slab, further reducing returns. For instance, if you are in the highest tax bracket, a 30% tax will be levied reducing your net return from 5.5% to 3.85%.

Portfolio Facing Losses? Here's How You Can Invest

If your portfolio is facing losses due to market movements, then taking money  off risk assets and moving to conventional investments like Fixed Deposits may not be a thoughtful approach. You can invest your portfolio through a diversified basket of mutual funds and ETFs which has the potential to beat inflation and can earn additional Alpha over traditional avenues such as Bank FDs. If inflation rises, its values have the potential to rise.

Here's an option to potentially earn higher than a Bank FD over the long term, you can consider balanced allocation with Quantum Multi Asset Fund of Funds (QMAFOF).

Quantum Multi Asset Fund of Funds Portfolio

Please note the above is a suggested fund allocation only and not as an investment advice / recommendation.

The Quantum Multi Asset Fund of Funds offers a balanced allocation with Equity, Debt and Gold asset classes in a single investment. Here the fund manager has the flexibility to rebalance depending on the market scenario.

As you can see below, over the last 2 years, QMAFOF has historically given better inflation adjusted returns than Bank FDs. The period since the onset of Covid-19 in 2020 has been considered for the illustration as inflation has been firming since then on account of the pandemic-induced supply chain disruptions. It showcases the gap in Bank Fixed Deposits vs QMAFOF to catch up with inflation and showcases the importance of balanced allocation in an investment portfolio.

The key takeaway is when you are planning your goals, don't forget to consider the impact of inflation. It can make a difference for achieving your much awaited goals such as a dream home or fund for your child's education.

Choose to address inflation with the DIY 12-20-80 approach or opt for a readymade allocation with Quantum Multi Asset Fund of Funds (QMAFOF).
